The vineyards in the Azores are grown on three islands, Graciosa, Biscoitos and Pico with the Denominations of Origin created in 1994, white wines are produced with the varieties Arinto, Terrantez, Boal and Fernão Pires and Verdelho, the most famous and most cultivated variety. The Azorean wines offer remarkable freshness and acidity.

The natural conditions of this region are ideal for the production of excellent white wines, as well as sparkling wines and brandies. Exposed to the influence of the Atlantic Ocean, the soils mostly of granite origin, the mild climate and high precipitation, translate into the freshness, lightness and elegance of the wines of this region. In terms of geographical area it is the largest Portuguese Demarcated Region, and one of the largest in Europe.

The wine region is located mainly on a plateau sheltered on three sides by the granite mountains of Serra da Estrela, Serra do Caramulo and Serra da Nave. This helps the area to maintain its temperate climate away from the effects of the nearby Atlantic Ocean.
